Chapter 23

Chopstick-Fueled Violence

When we made it to the center island, there were no Co’xatl or Jree in sight. It was eerie how empty the region was. I suspected a colossal battle was raging further in the region, but the islands in between effectively blocked our view.

As everyone followed me down the hill to the lagoon edge, I peered into the water’s depths. I realized that I hadn’t asked Umndirop if they had cleared out the Swampers or the Water Guardian. If they hadn’t, it was going to be difficult for my group to make the swim.

Turning to address the crowd, I raised my voice to be heard by everyone. “I’m gonna scout the water. There’s weak mobs swimming below, and they’re aggressive. But if we stick together, we should be able to push past them. Everyone get ready and arm up. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

Walking over to my party, I signaled Ally and Colten to come over as well.

“There’s a higher-level mob guarding the mechanism,” I said to the smaller group. “The Co’xatl might have killed it already, but if not, I’ll need to deal with it. Keep everyone here while I check it out.”

“You sure you don’t want help?” Lacy asked.

“I’ve got this,” I replied with a shake of my head. “Just make sure everyone’s ready to go at a moment’s notice.”

She pursed her lips as if she wanted to argue but eventually nodded in agreement.

I winked and turned toward the water. “Be right back.” Then I dove in, propelling myself into the depths with Red and application of my Friction energy.

Right away, I realized there were no Swampers in sight. The Co’xatl must have cleared them out. That would make things much simpler.

I made it to the bottom of the lagoon in moments and entered the smaller side tunnel that led to the underground lake where the Guardian lay in wait. When I reached the cave, I tread water to scan for the creature. But right away, I saw the frog-looking corpse lying on the small island in front of me. A quick glance at my Quest timer showed there were nearly fifteen minutes left to hit the final mechanism. I climbed out of the water and walked over to the mechanism. When I hit it, a familiar notification appeared in my vision.

Quest Complete!

The Water Mechanism has been activated. 3 of 3 First Floor Mechanisms have been activated for Instance #362. Passage to the center of the Floor has been granted.

Turning back to the water, I dove in and swam back through the tunnel. My swim back up was leisurely now that we weren’t on a time crunch, and I felt myself relax.

“Everything’s good to go,” I said as I pulled myself out of the lagoon. “Gonna be a piece of cake with the mobs dead—” I cut off as I took in the scared faces arrayed around the lagoon. “What is it?”

Lacy marched forward, two familiar chains wrapped around her body, pinning her arms to her side.
